What is an Upshernish?
Although a Jewish child's education begins at birth, the age of three marks a child's formal introduction into Jewish education and practice. The Upshernish is a joyous occasion marking a Jewish boy's third birthday. At the Upshernish, the boy's hair is cut and he is introduced to the Mitzvah of leaving Payot (sidelocks), and he begins wearing a Kippa and Tzitzit (four cornered garment).
